The Savage Readalong: Week 1

NOTE: THIS POST IS A WEEK EARLY

So I've finished the first week of The Savage Detectives, and I have to say I'm SHOCKED.

I'm not sure where my preconceived notions came from, but I dreaded reading this book as one would a painful shot delivered by a leering clown. Thank heavens for this readalong, or else I don't think I'd ever have done it.

Despite my fears of The Boring and The Pretentious (hence my beginning so early), the first 75 pages whizzed by (hence my finishing so fast). I didn't think it would be so interesting. I didn't think it would be so easy to read. I didn't think it would be so damn funny.

What are your reactions, fellow savages? Are you finding it as entertaining as I am?

And if you're not reading The Savage Detectives with us -- why not? It's not too late!

Yikes, it isn't even the first of March! I will maintain the read-along, however, despite it being midterm week and leaving for Berlin on Friday. To visceral realism!

Nathan - I'm a week early. As the readalong chair, I felt it my duty to do everything in my power to be on time -- especially since I thought I'd manage about 2 pages a day.

So, technically, you still have plenty of time :)

If this hadn't been the week from hell for me, I probably would have started early too. I hope it's as readable for me as it is for you.

I'm glad to hear it's good! I tried reading 2666 last year & was bored stiff, and have shied away from Bolano since. You're giving me second thoughts!

Just started it today and it looks good! I'm using the hardcover from the library so the pages probably don't match up totally. What is the date on your page 75 of paperback? I'll be back in a few days after some intense reading...

Jeanne, I read to the end of November 20.

Week 2 = the end of Section I.

Hope this helps!
