The Lost Symbol
Dan Brown

This month, I was happy to review The Lost Symbol for the wonderful Pajiba.com.

I had a lot of fun writing this review, and I think it shows. Among other things, I get to dissect Brown's "plundering prose" and paper-thin characterization. I'm not sure Brown intended to write a comedy, but The Lost Symbol had me cackling like a fiend.

Click here to read more and find out just what's so darn funny.

In a nutshell: Exactly what you'd expect, but fun enough that it doesn't really matter.

Bibliolatry Scale: 3 out of 6 stars

I don't really see the point of vitriolic comments about Dan Brown that some reviewers have written. The man doesn't claim to be the next Dostoevsky. He writes entertaining fluff and at least he's not churning out books every few weeks like some other authors. (James Patterson anyone?) His books are literary junk food and calling them out for not being intellectual or well-written is like deriding reality TV for not being quality television. They're not meant to be those things.

Anyway, I don't know if I'll ever read The Lost Symbol, but it was refreshing to read a review that didn't take the book so seriously.

I enjoyed for review. I have read the 'Da Vinci Code' and 'Angels and Demons". I hope to read this soon. I love them whether they are serious or not...just enjoy the thrill

I just finished The Lost Symbol and couldn't agree with your review more. This book will not change your life, but it is entertainment. Sometimes you don't want to go see the ballet; sometimes you just want to watch some "Flipping Out" on Bravo.

Hey great review :P for the sarcastic intellectual in all of us, Dan Brown's books are a goldmine for witty snobservations!

While i revel in the snobbery of paying out his mediocrity, my publishing tutor reckons that the slash-em style of editing in American publishing made the book what it is, maybe that's why people seem to enjoy reading him? (i.e. pace, pace and more pace with the not-so-rare cliffhanger)

How does one get a writing gig on Pajiba.com?

Wow -- great review. This book is near the top of my TBR pile and I am looking forward to reading it despite the plethora of bad reviews. Your review was the BEST bad review I've read!
