Twitter?

It seems like I've been hearing about this newfangled Twitter everywhere I've turned for the past few months. Seems like, much like methamphetamine, everyone is doing it. Always one to join the crowd, I'm now on Twitter too.

The problem? I have no idea what I'm doing. Please help. Or friend me, or whatever one does on Twitter. Is Twitter basically a facebook status thingee? What are the advantages to Twittering? Is this another worthless website I've gone and become a member of?

Oh brother.

Ha,ha! That happened to me too a while back. I kept hearing about Twitter and joined, only to find that I didn't know what in the world I was doing. I don't think I really understood the point of it. I quit it after a day or two, so I don't have any advice to give. Sorry! = )

Take comfort in knowing that you are not alone.

Twitter is essentially a micro-blogging platform, where post length is limited to 140 characters. Many people use twitter to update the masses on what they're doing at a particular moment; others use it for conversing with online friends and family; others use it as a place to share humourous quips & observations. For most people it's all of those things. You can also alert people via twitter when you have something like a new blog post. You could liken it to facebook status updates... sort of. I think that tweets are generally more interesting than fb statuses.

I've been using it for a few weeks and have found it useful/fun. The most important thing when you're beginning, I think, is to get some sort of 3rd party application that lets you post without having to actually go to twitter.com all of the time. I use TwitterFox, which is a firefox add-on.

Most of all -- have fun with it!

Ho...

So, I just got 3/4 of the way through Lolita... Then took a pause to go read something else.

Hmmm...

Not sure I understood that book.

ah well.

Christine: Thanks! Your post was quite helpful.

Edwin: To be fair, I was rocked by Lolita the second time around. Also, I had the annotated edition, which helped me pick up on all the "games" Nabokov plays with the text -- I never would have gotten it otherwise.

Twitter is a facebook status thingy without having to have pesky facebook crap too.

Already following you, but Christine did a good job of explaining it...I've found it's a great way to improve blog friendships. :)
